Dear All
Amidst the turmoil of changing computers, University email servers and
avoiding COVID-19, I only learned by accident today that Harvey
had died on April 9th 2020, aged 80 years (see
http://www.bristol.ac.uk/cmm/team/hg/) .
I don't recall seeing anything on Allstat, but perhaps I missed a key
message. Harvey's loss is, of course, a great blow to British
Statistics. He was an International authority in the several areas of
Statistics he had made his own. Today, in Britain, the numbers of these
influential statistical sages, willing and able to encourage young
statististicians and focus their research on important problems, is
declining. I was particularly pleased when Harvey, relatively
recently, took up the joint editorship of Series A (of the RSS's
journal) - back in 'safe hands' I thought then.
I did not know Harvey that well - we were not in regular contact, but as
we both worked on the development of models for longitudinal data
analysis there was mutual respect and
admiration, at least on my part, for Harvey's substantial contribution
to the subject. It was Harvey's work that my PhD student (Dr. John
Reeves) and I first read when we determined
to contribute some ideas to longitudinal model development. As it turned
out, we did not pursue the Multi-Level Modelling scheme, but Harvey was
John's external examiner and the ideas developed were to lead,
eventually, to joint-mean covariance modelling with Professor Jianxin
Pan in Manchester. I know Harvey approved, because later he invited Pan
and I to
the IoE to present our methods.
The last time I saw Harvey was in Cardiff in 2018 at the September RSS
conference: we gave talks in the same session, and had a pint
afterwards. He was speaking on missing data as I recall. It was like old
times, when after RSS meetings, we would retire to the Artillery Arms
and fire off a round or two on longitudinal modelling.
Like many others, I shall miss Harvey.
Sincere condolences to his family.
Gilbert
