Hi all,
If anyone has any good examples of products that have worked in an accessible WC & shower to incorporate a hoist and changing bench whilst leaving the toilet in the corner (albeit changing it to a self-washing toilet), please let me know? We have an incoming student who needs this in their home department and we have a new and fully compliant accessible WC & shower that would provide them that space but it's not big enough to add (another) Changing Places to campus in that location. We would be closer to the Space to Change (thanks for the link!) corner layout, except the shower must stay. The room is longer than a standard accessible WC & shower so there is enough space to fit a changing bench between the curtain and the toilet wall. Off the top of my head we are around the 7.5sqm mark, but site visits are off the cards at the moment.
Particular problems/queries at the moment:
- Shower curtain rail is anchored to the ceiling at the bend so clashes with the H-track hoist.
> Anyone have any good solutions to this that aren't a freestanding screen?
- Services behind the wall where the bench would go mean it may not be possible to wall mount the changing bench to allow it to fold away.
> Anyone come across any compact (adult) changing benches or benches that fold away like the wall mounted ones but are free-standing?
- Signage. Do we still label it as a Changing Places Facility and register it as such? I believe their criteria for a mini one is the 7.5sqm. Obviously pictures on the registration and signage would dictate where the nearest full size one is.
Best wishes,
Jenny

Hi Mark
I have a myriad of different drawings and designs for changing places and ‘enhanced accessible WCs’. There’s been no formal research (as far as I know) on alternatives to the two separate BS8300 layouts, but I’m guessing you mean the idea that if there’s limited space, then it may be possible to maintain the corner layout standard accessible loo design, but increase room size enough to accommodate a bench and hoist on the opposite wall? It would not suit all bench and hoist users of course, but would provide access for more people than the corner loo alone.
I can forward my own drawings if helpful.
