I'd also suggest doing some kind of internship, it will help you to gain the skills you need, make contacts, and be good for your CV.
My internship at the European Southern Observatory has done wonders for me (and others I know who were also interns there). You don't have to have any astronomy knowledge, but it's important to be interested and excited about it at least. The website says the role is unpaid, but you do get free accommodation and a stipend (it was about €600 a month when I did it three years ago) which is enough to survive on. https://recruitment.eso.org/
