Two lovers awaken in the pre-dawn
knowing they have spent
their last night together
She
These lips
above and below
my heart
divide and receive
but are ever joined
Why can it not be so
for the pair of us?
Each of my eyes
discerns as well as the other
but it takes both
to divine perspective
to weep
Together
we are complete
Why must we
break
into lesser halves
Now soon one comes
that neither of us wants
Suspend your light
O Sun
This one we are
craves longer
in dark
intact
He
Here whole
must I halve?
Withdraw
all I offer?
If so
this breach
can never reknit
Hold back your light Apollo
Let our darkness lengthen
And as for heat
our own will suffice
Unless this shiver portends
a footstep
A knock sounds
The Watchman enters
All eyes meet
and cloud
