Hi all,
I thought I would add some of the things we're working on at Art UK into this list to see if anything was of interest or could be of help to collections at this time.
At Art UK we now have almost 250,000 digitised artworks online from all over the country – from over 3,250 venues and a growing number of public sculptures.
We're using these to tell stories about the art in the UK's public collections; written by contributors within and outwith the sector. These are being read and shared by a growing audience, and we're always on the lookout for more from collections to share with our followers.
We're interested in stories that talk about any aspect of art or can showcase the voices from the collections across the UK, so if you have a story you would like to share on Art UK; do get in touch with us. We also want to make the best use of our social media to support collections as well, so if you have content on your site about your artworks that you want to share more widely, let us know, and we can promote it across our social media channels.
Alongside, we've also spent the last few months working on a new curation tool that our users will be able to experiment with from early May. The idea around it is to allow users to create albums/showcases from the works on the site. They will then have the option to share these publicly. As a separate feature, collections on Art UK will be able to create a digital surrogate of an exhibition (or create those that aren't able to take place). Collections can add any artwork currently on Art UK, or will be able to upload their own, custom images to supplement what is available.
We had envisioned using this to let collections create an online archive of past exhibitions. Still, during this time, it could be used to show exhibition content at a time when sites are closed, or if exhibitions/displays are difficult to stage because of restrictions?
As mentioned above, we're still a little way away from being able to launch this, but if anyone wants more information, or think this could be of use to them; do please get in touch.
For partner collections which are interested in uploading new artworks to the site (and can get a hold of their data when working remotely), we're still able to add these and promote them across the website and on social.
In brief, at this challenging time, we want to support participating collections in using Art UK to raise awareness of the art they hold and the stories behind it so that when better times return, more people will head to see the art in their local area for real. If you want to discuss any of this further, please feel free to get in touch off-list with Art UK's Head of Content, Andrew Shore on [log in to unmask], or feel free to drop me a message off-list.
Regards,
Terry
