Information professionals usually discuss knowledge organization (KO) in the
context of collection organization and access. At this event, our three speakers
will look into how KO techniques are utilized by the publishing and retail
industries to make content accessible directly by users. Conrad Taylor will give
an overview of the origins of mark-up and its role in tagging content. Niké
Brown will provide, using the example of Wiley, an insight into the role of
taxonomies in publishing and Tony Russell-Rose will consider some of the latest
advances in information retrieval as an alternative to traditional KO-mediated
access to content. A panel discussion will focus on whether KO-mediated access
to content may be redundant.
This afternoon event is organized to mark the occasion of the Annual General
Meeting of ISKO UK (the British Chapter of ISKO) that will take place before the
event at 13:30. ISKO UK welcomes all who wish to join us at our 18th AGM.
