Hello everyone,
I do a lot of photographs cataloguing at the National Science and Media Museum in Bradford. The museum's collection spans the entire history of photography and we have a large amount of 19th century colonial images. My colleagues and I have been discussing how best to go about describing such photographs in our catalogue records, maintaining cultural respect without erasing history. What terminology is most appropriate?
I'm wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of archival or museum studies/papers that have been written on the subject of describing and cataloguing colonial photographs with sensitive and/or uncomfortable imagery? Is anyone currently doing research into this area who wouldn't mind sharing their findings or processes?
Thank you so much for reading. I hope you're all keeping well during this strange and uncertain time.
All the best,
