Thank you to everyone who has sent me email messages, I’ve been to overwhelmed to reply personally. Since Sunday night and changing Government advice, my organisation has agreed the archive public services should be temporarily closed, not that it matters since everyone has cancelled their appointments!
I am really delighted to see archival institutions issuing public guidance as to justifying closing services, how to work proactively remotely. This public support made me feel a lot better and added weight to my arguments when having to deal with unreasonable behaviours. To all those who have sent emails and issued supporting guidance... thank you! Like many archivists I am entirely alone, your support means a lot.
On a final note, we are in the midst of a crisis, a kind word and spreading goodwill goes a long way for all individuals and communities. As a profession, we have access to incredible heritage, incredible stories. We have an opportunity to spread some distraction and joy during #archive30 next month... but let’s try use some imagination and ask how can our archives help to spread good will?
Many of my elderly stakeholders are at home, isolated, in some cases alone. I’ve started to post them photocopies of amusing articles or images held in our archive. It’s a small act just to let them know we are thinking about them.
