Funding for a PhD studentship supported by the EPSRC and EDF Energy is available to work on the application of satellite earth observation data to monitor built infrastructure.
Improvements in the spatial and temporal resolution of remotely sensed satellite data have led to a data deluge. This 'big data' opportunity can help to characterise and monitor human activities on the earth’s surface, including the monitoring of structures in the built environment to improve the resilience of our cities. To leverage this benefit, several challenges have to be addressed in investigations using such large datasets. This includes the extraction of information from large scale datasets collected by multiple satellite sensors, which may have poor training sets to define the model for the analysis.
As a starting point, the satellite data will primarily be Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR), which is used to measure millimetre-scale movements over wide areas and thus identify signs of unusual infrastructure behaviour, but the successful candidate will have the opportunity to shape the research to have maximum real-life impact.
The funding for this position is limited to UK students and includes the opportunity to spend 3 to 6 months in industry with EDF in London.
