The MRC Biostatistics Unit at the University of Cambridge is offering an exciting opportunity for a postdoctoral research fellow. This is an opportunity for an enthusiastic and independent researcher with an interest in the development of novel methodology to be successfully used in real-life health care applications. The post-holder will be part of Dr Sofia Villar's research group and will have the opportunity to significantly contribute to Sofia Villar's methodological research in relation to designing and implementing optimal clinical trials. Depending on the interests and skills of the post-holder, the role could focus on: i) addressing key methodological issues in adaptive designs (especially those related to optimal or "bandit" designs); ii) addressing practical questions of applied relevance for novel designs; and/or iii) introducing novel ideas from potentially related areas like machine learning, reinforcement learning, optimisation or information theory.
This post is for a highly qualified early career researcher and is viewed as a training and development position. The post-holder will develop theoretical approaches continuing the research programme that started as part of Sofia Villar's Biometrika postdoctoral fellowship. Additionally, there will be lots of opportunities to interact and collaborate with researchers both in the MRC Biostatistics Unit and external collaborators to Sofia's group - these include but are not limited to: William Rosenberger (GMU, USA), David Roberston (University of Cambridge), Thomas Jaki and Peter Jacko (Lancaster University), Joseph Jay Williams (University of Toronto, Canada) and Anna Rafferty (Carleton College, Canada).
Candidates for the MRC Postdoctoral Fellow position will have a PhD in statistics, or a relevant discipline; scientific computing skills (e.g. Julia, Matlab, R), statistical packages (e.g. R). You must have good communication skills and be able to contribute substantially to writing scientific papers. Knowledge of related areas like optimisation, machine learning techniques, clinical trials or others is desirable but not essential.
