We have done the same for analysers in our COVID areas. Staff cannot keep taking off the PPE equipment to access the ID badge. The clinical areas have accepted responsibility for the useage

We have a barcode for blood gas testing in the isolated areas. The user barcode is laminated and attached to the isolated gas machine for quick and easy access.

In controlled areas which are designated assessment, isolation, critical we will ensure all workers are trained but the device would be open to reduce complications in sample processing.

Not ideal and goes against every one of my instincts! We are keeping one risk assessment for adjustments to POCT activities.

Each change is being listed in its own right with the actions taken and mitigation. Having all changes in one document allows us to track them and adjust risk ratings.

Having listened to the staff working in these areas and the difficulties they face in locations of increased risk, we feel this is an appropriate step to take.

I know this approach will not sit well with some, myself included.

Hi

This is where my personal take on training being given by location based clinical educators comes into full effect. We are conscious that some of our clinical educators are being displaced, so we have raised this as a concern with our care group so that consideration is given to backfilling this function in isolation areas, critical care, assessment areas.

With the current redeployment of devices, new devices, changing staff, new staff, returning staff, the burden on the POCT team is too much to deal with this training themselves. We are operating a split team working in the lab and from home.

Other pressures will be:

1. POCT team members are not going into isolation areas (red or amber zones)

2. Staff are being trained ahead of the new isolation areas opening (not after, when patients will be there)

3. We are observing distancing so can't cover groups around a device

4. Staff who are working in isolation areas cannot come in and out of those areas, leaving their clinical role

5. We are reducing ward based activities to reduce risk of transmission/contact with more sources than absolutely necessary

I hope this helps with the thought process around training delivery. Thanks to everyone's input on badge use. We look like we are about to relax this in COVID areas to support staff activities.

Hi Helen

Are you able to share the video and MCQ? I cover 2 Trusts and have been asked to train over 600 staff over the next 3 weeks. There is only myself and a band 4 so not really sure how we will do it and still cover POCT for troubleshooting etc.

Kind Regards

Dear All,

I am wondering what measures you have put in place for training redeployed /NHSP /agency staff who are being brought into wards at this time. We have always insisted on face to face training initially but this is proving difficult in trying to adhere to social distancing and with staff becoming increasingly busy. We do have comprehensive eLearning but have only used this for refresher training. I see there are some good videos on the internet but these are really just for an overview and not specific enough for our needs. Would be interested to hear what others are doing.

KR,

Mary
