Hi all,
I am normally a lurker on this list. I am from a digital library background
and am also into making games. I don't know if anyone has already suggested
this in this thread (I'm on my phone and can't read it all) , but how about
running some kind of creative online jam with a theme? I co-organised one
in 2018 (Gothic Novel Jam https://itch.io/jam/gothic-novel-jam). We
encouraged people of all ages around the world to produce games, art,
writing etc that had a Gothic theme and upload it to the site I linked to.
It didn't have to be a digital creative output - for example, my favourite
response was someone creating a Lair of the White Worm Kewpie doll and
uploading photos of it. 😊 Depending on how long this isolation lasts it
could be a new theme every couple of weeks. I am more than happy to set
this up if people thinks it's worth it, but I don't have the museum and
heritage contacts to spread the word about it. I need a snappy title for
it though. Maybe #MuseumAtHomeJam ???

All thoughts appreciated.

Hi again,
I was thinking jam themes could follow schools curriculum as well. I also
have no background in education, so don't know if all schools follow the
same focused curriculum or they have leeway in what they do. For example
will all year X's be covering topic Z in April, or will some be covering
topic Y? So again any advice would be appreciated.

I am normally a lurker on this list. I am from a digital library background and am also into making games. I don't know if anyone has already suggested this in this thread (I'm on my phone and can't read it all) , but how about running some kind of creative online jam with a theme? I co-organised one in 2018 (Gothic Novel Jam https://itch.io/jam/gothic-novel-jam). We encouraged people of all ages around the world to produce games, art, writing etc that had a Gothic theme and upload it to the site I linked to. It didn't have to be a digital creative output - for example, my favourite response was someone creating a Lair of the White Worm Kewpie doll and uploading photos of it. 😊 Depending on how long this isolation lasts it could be a new theme every couple of weeks. I am more than happy to set this up if people thinks it's worth it, but I don't have the museum and heritage contacts to spread the word about it. I need a snappy title for it though. Maybe #MuseumAtHomeJam ???

something together - to play / learn remotely, as it were.

I don't have a cohesive idea, but maybe something like... the digital
equivalent of a paint by numbers wall, where everyone who walks past
colours in one square and together they build a picture... that's an
analogy rather than an actual suggestion but I hope it made sense!

This is a good idea, but only possible if the material is largely available already in digital form.

Here at Auchindrain Township, in the wild, wet, west of Scotland, we are looking ahead to what will probably be our worst summer season ever because around 80% of our visitors are normally tourists from England or mainland Europe, and by and large we don’t expect them to travel this year. But to keep the museum in the public eye, and to provide some diversion from the boredom of self-isolation and limited social contact, we will be promoting the virtual tour available through our website. Originally intended to meet the needs of those interested in our subject-matter but for whom an actual visit was logistically impracticable, it will maybe now be of wider value.

For those interested, the tour can be found here: https://www.auchindrain.org.uk/explore-auchindrain/. We are still completing a phase of development to take it forwards from being English language only, but are close to completion of the work to make it fully available in Italian, Spanish, French, Dutch and German – and, of course, Scottish Gaelic.

Personally, I’d be really interested in what’s happening to everyone’s digital audience figures during this period – visits to What’s On pages will be falling off a cliff – so how are users finding your ‘rich digital content’, what kinds of things are they looking for/at? What kinds of things are you specifically promoting to them (is there anything that you feel wary of publicising to people?) Are you getting as many visitors? Are they spending longer on the site? And how will these numbers be changing by month 3….?

Also very interested in what people are doing with their homepages as they close their buildings and cease their live programmes.

Given today’s announcement by Gov on Coronavirus measures involving fairly severe social distancing etc - my question is: what would help museums, from a web / nerdy point of view?

I have very little idea what I actually mean by the question (which is always slightly discouraging…) but maybe stuff like:

* are there tools that could be quickly set up on shared hosting to facilitate online spaces for learning? Simple VLE software?

I know software won’t change the world, but there’s some brilliant brains on here so if some of you chime in with some thoughts we might see a common thread of “what we really need right now is…"

What is being discussed is compiling and sharing the best resources that
exist and promoting all opportunities for online events.


What follows is my email to the GEM list:


Reaching families is the key consideration - if we're going to some effort
to create resources and try new digital outreach services at what is quite
a stressful time. I'm thinking teachers are going to be the main conduits,
sending resources and tasks to parents/students e.g. via school websites
and VLEs. A few families might seek it out themselves, but their default
options will be their favourite online games, creative apps and streaming
services. The parents most likely to be reached directly by museums are the
thousands of existing home educators who rely on daily outings to
libraries, museums, clubs and events who might be looking for more online
material.


Thinking about what families will be most missing, it will be play and
connection with other kids. They'll probably be quickly bored of
homework-style study provided by schools (or tutors) so museums and arts
organisations can fill that gap. In this emergency, how can museums really
innovate in meeting these needs?


This is a real layered emergency. Children and young people were already
increasingly anxious about things like Brexit and about the climate
emergency, which continues. The virus will make many feel that their
concerns about their futures are being swept aside. It’s SATs and exams
season too, and there will be financial and medical fears for so many
families. I'm picturing, for example, a young person with asthma feeling
vulnerable, a child with a mum who is pregnant being told to isolate,
perhaps with a dad who is on a zero hours contract losing work.


The main concern of families will be keeping morale high in boredom and
stress, and being able to feel that they can do something to make their
lives better during and beyond this crisis.


There's already an overload of information, about education, about cultural
offers, about health, about climate change, about Brexit. And now about the
virus. The magic of arts and museums is to create clarity and meaning
amidst all this overload, to help people connect with other people,
with contexts, and with themselves. The whole situation is incredibly
distressing, but we've been given time by so many closures and
cancellations and the requirement of social distancing. What is the very
best and most relevant stuff we can do together?


Maybe museums can use this to test how they can be resilient and relevant.
Also how to help people cope with the layered emergency, how to understand
what is happening on a global and systemic scale, how to use creativity to
keep well, how to be compassionate and helpful for others, how to source
food, how to cook with less, and how to keep healthy.
