This reunion is based on the Project titled La ruta de las Estrímnides. Mediterranean Commerce and Interculturality in Northwestern Iberia) (HAR2015-68310-P, 2016 – 2018). Its main goal was to analyse with renewed perspectives the intercultural encounters between the Atlantic communities and Mediterranean traders during the II Iron Age. This was a starting point to provide a systematic analysis within this previous historical context, related to the colonial dynamics. For that, we worked on three different kinds of research: a reinterpretation of the classical tradition about the Cassiterides; a review of the Modern Historiography about the exegesis of those sources; finally, an examination of the archaeological data from some Galician castros where Mediterranean products were found (A Lanzada, Toralla, Castros de Neixón, Fozara, Vigo, etc). Among the archaeological record, we prestigious goods (jewellery, glass, table ware), as well as food and drink goods (salted fish products, wine, etc.) carried in amphorae. An overview was critical to determine: the origin and spread of the exogenous products in this area; their consumption contexts (chronological, functional); the rhythm of these navigations towards the North-western Iberia; the routes and the boat types used by the Punic merchants; and to analyse the commercial dynamics and its political and social implications among the communities which received those products.

The Project’s results have been excellent. The main goal of this panel is to expose these results and compare them with other scholars’ work, considering four lines of research:

1) The examination the Graeco-Latin traditions about the Tin Islands: their location, the historical or legendary accounts about them, the Punic (Hanno) and Greek (Pytheas) navigations to the North-western Iberia, the geographical depiction of Iberia’s Atlantic shores, etc.
2) Modern historiographical traditions about the Cassiterides from the 16th Century to the 21st Century, particularly the use of these texts to locate the ancient landscapes in different mainland or islands (e.g. Cornwall, Scilly Islands, Azores)
3) Studies of navigation systems: boats, nautical conditions, etc. on the Atlantic façade during the 1st Millenium BC.
4) Archaeological studies about the Mediterranean products found in Galician castros of the North-western façade of the Iberian Peninsula, especially unpublished data.
