Hi
I agree with Chris that it is important that terms make sense outside of a hierarchy. In Glos (and I'm sure elsewhere) our glossaries do not have a hierarchy so each term has to make sense in a single drop-down menu.

In Monument Type users are guided to the plan types which can be found grouped under the term 'Farmstead' so it is clear what they relate to when a user looks at the hierarchy. Having said that I take your point that adding farmstead would make the relationship even clearer; unfortunately our thesaurus building software would not allow terms with more than 32 characters, including spaces, to be entered leaving us with their current form in the thesaurus. This is something that we could look at in the future.

Yes, but that's my point - without the additional knowledge of where they came from these terms are rather silly. Surely monument thesaurus terms have to be nouns not adjectives? They need "farmstead" adding.

Hi Chris,

The Farmstead plan types came out of the English Heritage farmsteads project back in c2014 when we created a separate Farmsteads thesaurus; all the new terminology within which was incorporated into Monument Type.

Not related to the most recent list, but checking for the first time in a while what was missing from our monuments thesaurus, I noticed a lot of farmstead plan form entries that don't say what they are.

For example "Dispersed cluster plan" - don't these need "farmstead" adding to the end? I thought it was a searchlight deployment until I read the scope notes!

Have these been hoovered up from a plan-form list where it was obvious what they were?

Hi Tim,

There's a link to a .pdf of all the new and update terms at the bottom of the page. The text at the top should read v23, all the .csv zip files will mention the version in their file extension and the .pdfs are dated February 2020; you may need to refresh the page failing that clear out your cookies.

Thanks Paul,
Is there an updated simple list of new terms for us manual updaters? The text on the web page says it is v.22 - or is the file it links to up to date?
Cheers
Tim
