Call for Papers
Following the success of our Research Symposia in 2017, 2018 and 2019, the Centre for Research in Tourism Excellence (CERTE) at the University of Sunderland is pleased to announce the Call for Papers for its 4th International Research Symposium titled ‘Tourism, Hospitality and Events: Values and Transformations’. This one-day research event will be held on Thursday 21st May 2020 at the University of Sunderland’s beautiful Sir Tom Cowie Campus.
As research seeks to advance understanding and inform action, it is thus of considerable value. A popular term in numerous research areas, value is conceptualised in many regards, from ethics, to experiences, to marketing but shares a commonality in terms of importance, significance and meaning. Tourism, hospitality and events research is built upon core values, and also creates value through transformation and impact. That is, the impact of innovative and interdisciplinary research is dependent on ideas and resolutions that promote transformation for industry practitioners, scholars and stakeholders alike. As the industry continues to grow, transformational ideas and resolutions are igniting and fuelling the growth of the industry, gathering considerable momentum. However as the momentum continues, this generates a need for further research and resolution from new challenges and advancements. Thus, it has become ever more important for tourism, hospitality and event scholars to continue to engage in transformational research, adopting more interdisciplinary and innovative approaches to understand how contemporary issues affect, and are affected by theory, practice and scholarship. Furthermore, it is important to seek to develop more strategic insights in order to comprehend what these changes portend for the future of these important sectors within our dynamic world.
This 4th International Research Symposium therefore aims to promote values and transformations in the research fields of tourism, hospitality and events by bringing together researchers, industry stakeholders, and communities to create a space for the dissemination and co-production of innovative research and practices.
Proposed Topics for Abstract Submissions
We welcome submissions from experienced researchers, early career researchers, and research students in a variety of formats including traditional paper presentations, videos, posters, and art work. Both conceptual and empirical work are welcome. The proposed topics can include but are not limited to the following:
• Consumer behaviour, decision-making, experience and satisfaction
• Corporate social responsibility
• Cultural, heritage and museum studies
• Cyber security, AI, IT, ICT, e-tourism, and emerging technologies
• Demand-supply forecasting, and performance studies
• Development and planning evolution on destinations
• Ethics, emotions, and morality
• Event, sport and festivals
• Globalisation and internationalisation
• Human resources, diversity, and labour operations
• Human rights and gender equality
• Impact of big data
• Innovation, creativity and change management
• Marketing, advertising, and branding of enterprises and destinations
• Methodological robustness and new techniques
• Migration, refugees and labour mobilities
• Monetary and financial issues and challenges
• New trends in education and training
• Pioneering operational and managerial techniques and approaches
• Risk and crisis management
• Sexuality (including LGBTQ+)
• Spa, wellness and health issues
• Sustainability, carrying capacity and growth limitations
• The sharing and visitor economy
• Other interdisciplinary areas
Abstract Submission
An abstract of between 400 to 500 words (excluding references) should be submitted. The abstract should include an indication of the purpose of the research, the interdisciplinary approach taken, the methods used and the key (expected) findings. Please Note: At least one author should present at the research symposium. Since the research symposium is a one day event, overseas (non UK based) delegates will have the alternative of delivering their presentation via SKYPE.

Deadline for abstract submission: Sunday 23rd February 2020
Notification of acceptance: Sunday 1st March 2020
Registration Deadline: Sunday 26th April 2020
Research Symposium Date: Thursday 21st May 2020
Research Symposium Fees
The registration fee is £50. Fee includes: Symposium proceedings, coffee breaks, and lunch.

Publication Opportunities
All abstracts will be included in the Research Symposium proceedings. In addition, abstracts may be selected for full paper development and publication in the following journals:

2. E-Review of Tourism Research
3. International Journal of Spa and Wellness
4. International Journal of Tourism Cities
Please Note: For publication consideration in the above journals, the abstract should have already been presented at the Research Symposium.
