Hello Anthropology-Matters!
My colleagues and I are offering a short course on mining, culture, and
environment in Mongolia this summer. Details are available through the
American Center for Mongolian Studies Field School site, American Center of
Mongolian Studies - Environment, Humans, and Mining in Northern Mongolia |
Mining and the Environment
<https://www.mongoliacenter.org/fellowships/mongolia-field-school-2020/mining-environment/>.
A recording of a recent informational webinar is also available here
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kG3cr3wu8jQ&>.
Our course is open to the interested public, students, and researchers.
This is a great opportunity for an introduction to a country that is often
difficult to access for researchers and an opportunity to visit an area of
Mongolia that is rarely seen by tourists.
Feel free to be in touch with any questions!
Thanks,
Marissa

Course Description
This course focuses on the intersections of “modern” (scientific and
engineering) as well as “traditional” (including Buddhist and shamanic)
knowledge and knowledge practices on human-environment relations through
the context of mining activities in the Northern regions of Mongolia.
Led by Mongolian geoscientist Gantulga Bayasgalan, Californian
anthropologist Marissa Smith, and Montanan ecologist Rebecca Watters, this
Field School focuses on intersections of “modern” (scientific and
engineering) as well as “traditional” (including Buddhist and shamanic)
knowledge and knowledge practices on human environment relations,
especially with the emphasis of mining activities in the Northern Mongolian
regions. Participants in this program learn from Mongolian experts and
professionals about not only their goals and concerns, but also their ways
of addressing and achieving them with special scope on environmental issues
from mining. Participants will have the opportunity to interview and
participate in professional meetings, discussions and activities of their
interest, directed by instructors as well as local Mongolian counterparts.
