ABOUT THE ROLE:
You will join the Biostatistics Research Group to develop and carry out research, contributing as a team member to the Cancer Research UK project ("Gains in life expectancy as tangible metrics for improvement assessment"). The post will involve the development and application of statistical methods using population-based cancer data. The post will require expertise in biostatistics/cancer epidemiology/applied statistics.
The aim of the project is to develop approaches to calculate life expectancy metrics that show either the actual or potential benefit of an early diagnosis initiative. In order to do so, approaches to estimate long-term stage-specific survival estimates are necessary, with cancer stage being a strong determinant of outcome for cancer patients, and changes in stage distribution being one of the targets of an early diagnosis initiative. Stage information is often missing in registry-based data for a proportion of patients, with this proportion being quite high historically. Therefore, giving long-term estimates requires a number of assumptions that will be further explored as part of this project. Further consideration of how best to link the corresponding estimates to relevant health economic evaluations will also be part of the project.
ABOUT YOU:
A degree level education in a subject with substantial mathematics or statistical content is essential for this role. For the Research Associate post (grade 7), you will have a PhD (or relevant MSc plus equivalent research experience) in a relevant area (medical statistics /cancer epidemiology) and be able to provide evidence of research productivity (including high-quality research publications, presentations).
