Come along to Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh on 6th March to join our International Women's Day celebrations with a special film screening and panel discussion
RAFIKI | WANURI KAHIU | KENYA/SOUTH AFRICA/FRANCE/NETHERLANDS/GERMANY 2018 | 1H22M | SWAHILI WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES | 12A
With scenes of youthful rebellion connected through shades of fuchsia and violet, this gentle film explores the early expressions of love between two young women in Nairobi, Kenya. Set against the backdrop of the bustling streets of a big city, and exemplary in its cinematic exploration of what the director calls her "Afrobubblegum" style, the two very different girls must choose between love and safety, as they are surrounded by insular gossip, local politics and burgeoning maturity. Their magnetic pull draws us into a queer Romeo and Juliet romance, as they try to hide their relationship from their politically opposing fathers.
Directed by Wanuri Kahiu, who is part of a strong cohort of Kenyan female filmmakers, Rafiki was the first Kenyan film to be included in the Un Certain Regard section in Cannes in 2018, and was controversially banned from being shown in Kenya by the Kenya Film Classification Board before it became one of Kenya's Oscars submissions.
