*Workplan:*
The PhD researcher will, in close collaboration with the Principal
Investigator and the rest of the team be expected to:
- develop research within work package D “Universal human rights
and international indigenous knowledge brokers” of research stream II of
the RIVERS project,
- conduct ethnographic research (among others, participant
observation, in-depth interviews and collaborative workshops), among
others, during the yearly sessions of the Expert Mechanism of the Rights of
Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP), annual report presentation of the Special
Rapporteur on the rights of indigenous peoples at the Human Rights Council
and side events related to the RIVERS project in Geneva,
- develop his/her doctoral thesis under the supervision of the
Principal Investigator of RIVERS, Prof. dr. Lieselotte Viaene within the
general themes of the RIVERS project and enroll in one of the PhD
programmes of the University Carlos III de Madrid (more info:
https://www.uc3m.es/phdprogram/home )
- participate in the project’s regular team meetings and (internal
and public) seminars,
- present and publish joint publications related to the research
findings (academic publications, research reports, policy briefs, …),
- participate in and support in the organization of scientific
events and events for civil society (for example cineforo),
- contribute to RIVERS’s communication and dissemination
activities (website, social media, blog),
- support any research activities associated with the project’s
general objectives,
The selected researcher should be available to join the RIVERS research
team at the University Carlos III de Madrid at the moment of his/her
hiring.
*Working conditions: *
1. Being part of a vibrant, supportive, intercultural and bi-lingual
research team which will conduct innovative and cutting-edge research
within the Department of Social Science.
2. The project RIVERS will cover the inscription fee of the PhD
programme
3. Based on an agreed work plan, the project provides research funds
for fieldwork in Geneva, selected conference attendance and other
research-related expenses.
4. As part of the PhD training, support will be given in writing
academic articles for peer-reviewed journals and to present research
progress in international scientific conferences. The person has the option
to complete the PhD programme with a PhD based on scientific publications.
*Requirements:*
1. Excellent skills for qualitative research demonstrated in the
master's thesis in social sciences (such as international human rights law,
rights of indigenous peoples, anthropology, sociology, international
studies).
2. Previous experience and/or interest in developing a PhD research
project in the fields of legal anthropology or human rights anthropology,
political ontology, rights of indigenous peoples.
3. Previous experiences (training/courses, Master's field work) in
the use of ethnographic research methods such as participant observation,
focus groups, interviews and life stories; as well as commitment to
ethnographic field work.
4. Knowledge and/or experience with the UN human rights protection
system.
5. Knowledge and/or experience of research and/or work with
indigenous peoples.
6. Excellent communication skills in English (oral and written) and
knowledge of Spanish; knowledge of an indigenous language will be valued.
7. Previous experience in team work (academic and/or professional)
and willingness to participate in interdisciplinary and bilingual teamwork
(Spanish-English).
8. While a work visa will be required, this call is open to citizens
of non-EU countries who wish to apply. Researchers belonging to a ethnic /
indigenous group are strongly invited.
9. Candidates must be available for interviews (on distance, skype).

· A detailed CV including information on training in methodology (in
English) and final average grades obtained in undergraduate and graduate
degrees.
· A copy of the Bachelor and/or Master degree.
In addition, the following documents should be submit in PDF format (Máx. 3
pdf documents):
· A brief motivation letter (in English)
· A preliminary research statement outlining which issues and
research methods related to the RIVERS project the candidate would like to
focus on in the PhD thesis (max 2500 words)
· 1-2 single authored writing samples (article, book chapter and/or
master thesis) which provide evidence of qualitative experience;
· Two reference letters (academic/professional) and also names and
contact details of a maximum of three references (academic/professional).
· Only short-listed candidates will be interviewed.
