POSITION: Research Assistant for field research in Gujarat (India)
PROJECT: Post-Doctoral Project “The Social Anthropology of Rabies Epidemiology and Elimination”
DUTY: Carrying out contact tracing in Gujarat
DETAILS: The candidate will initially collect information about bite/rabies patients from local communities and/or health facilities. Then he/she will track each and every chain of transmission in the area under study. He/she will contact (in person or via phone) each bite and/or rabies patient, set an appointment for an in-person interview at the patient’s house, carry out the interview (using a questionnaire on an App), and call the patient after 2 months for follow-up. Then, based on the information collected on this case, he/she will repeat the same procedure to identify / locate / contact / interview each person that has been bitten by the same dog. At the same time, he/she will collect information also on the dogs that are part of this chain of transmission, both as biting dogs and bitten dogs.
LOCATION: Rural areas of Anand/Kheda/Ahmedabad districts
DURATION: Full-time (8 hours a day), 5 days a week (to be agreed upon), 6 months from February 2020 (extendable).
SALARY: based on case-to-case needs (e.g. local accommodation, car rental, fuel reimbursement…) and experience. The employer will be the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (Bangalore).

- Problem-solving attitude
- Fluency in Gujarati
- Availability to drive a car or a motorbike within the study area and a valid 4-wheeler license
- Sufficient communication skills in English
- Willingness to interact politely with patients regardless of their gender, religion, caste, educational background or financial background
