Hi Debbie,
Yes it is definitely very noticeable the amount of failed results when using a capillary tube samples. This occurs most often on our birthing centre so scalps/cord blood etc and they use a b221 analyser, and I am sure they are not using Vaseline or anything like that. Staff have to re bleed the patients and ensure they roll and mix the capillary sufficiently. But I would also be interested to hear what others are doing.
Many Thanks,
Nicola Hodges

Are they using Vaseline (or something similar) when collecting samples? I remember an issue a while back and it was due to the Vaseline mixing with the sample

Dearest mailbase contributors.
Happy New Year!
Can I please ask if anyone has had any experience of difficulties obtaining results from their blood gas analysers when using capillary sampling of viscous blood?
Specifically the Cobas b123?
We have encountered some issues with foetal and newborn samples, and were wondering if the wider POCT community has experienced this and/or managed to resolve it.
Warmest regards ,
