Hi All,
I have done some work specifically on high Hct measurements through the Cobas b123 and I can relate to Debbie's query.
The work performed involved creating a high Hct sample >62% and running through the Cobas b123 blood gas machine, using the right angled amplod adapters, provided by the manufacture.
One numerous occasions the machine displayed sample positioning errors.
The running the same sample, in a heparinised 3ml syringe, through the machine, managed to obtain readings. However on occasion this proved difficult and had to push the syringe end. The highest reading obtained through 'the push method' gave a reading of >75%.
Not ideal and definitely not workable in the ward setting.
The work around given to me by the manufacture, is to use 'clot catchers' however I do not see this as a workable solution, if anything hinder the flow?
Does anyone have a suitable solution or alternative workaround? Or any comments on the use of clot catchers in the Labour/NNU setting?

Are they using Vaseline (or something similar) when collecting samples? I remember an issue a while back and it was due to the Vaseline mixing with the sample

Dearest mailbase contributors.
Happy New Year!
Can I please ask if anyone has had any experience of difficulties obtaining results from their blood gas analysers when using capillary sampling of viscous blood?
Specifically the Cobas b123?
We have encountered some issues with foetal and newborn samples, and were wondering if the wider POCT community has experienced this and/or managed to resolve it.
Warmest regards ,
