Hi Theresa,
We also run urine pregnancy tests on all women who might undergo surgery, radiation or certain drugs, such as Isotretinoin. We will also be rolling out a new user guide with areas for recording results, including the visual assessment of the urine colour, cloudiness and blood staining.
When we look at rolling out new urine pregnancy testing analysers we will be asking each area to undertake a risk assessment for how they use the test (such as in Dermatology) so that they can agree the risk is appropriate for their clinical practice.
I am aware of a case in London where a false urine pregnancy negative test resulted in the patient being given therapeutic doses of radionuclides only to find out a short while later that the patient was pregnant. Checking serum samples taken at the time of the urine test showed a raised hCG.

Hi Theresa
The majority of our Pregnancy tests are performed to rule out Pregnancy before treatment/procedures and it is Trust policy to perform Pregnancy tests on all women of childbearing age before surgery.
Kind Regards
Sharon

Subject: Pregnancy tests
Hi All,
Happy New Year.
Can I ask everyone about the use of the urine pregnancy test on asymptomatic patients, with no history suggestive of pregnancy? Do you run the test on these patients?
We routinely run them on women between certain ages before they have x-rays, procedures etc. However our supplier wants to discuss the use of the test in these patients.
Would be interested in your use of the test before we have the discussion with them.
Thanks,
Theresa
