Subject: Technical meetings at the start of 2020
Hi All
Happy new year.
1) I have decided to arrange a Technical meeting this week to discuss the perfSonar refresh. I know there has been quite a lot of discussion at the Tuesday meetings, but there are a few unresolved questions. It is also not clear to me how far everybody is along with their procurements. A few sites are also waiting on me to purchase the hardware for them and I need to get delivery addresses etc from you. The agenda can be found here:
https://indico.cern.ch/event/876065/
I have created a google doc here:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1JPmOQ0XjQLZUsuSgQYjxmAAT9CxgxOu66gL2RGiLJVk/edit?usp=sharing
which I hope people could spend a minute adding noting the status of their procurement. I have labeled the sites which I believe I am buying hardware for and you need to provide different information. Obviously if any of the information is sensitive (e.g. to enter your new machine room you need to say “friend” in Glaswegian), email me that information directly as this page is not protected.
2) For next week I would like to arrange a meeting to discuss possible proposal for the Google Summer of Code. Yesterday there was an email to the HSF mail list asking for mentors for projects. You can find more information here: https://hepsoftwarefoundation.org/activities/gsoc.html
I am sure there are many bits of development work that we need done some of which may be applicable to this. It should be noted that we did not get all the development effort we asked for in GridPP6, and it helps people like Dave Britton and Pete Clarke to build cases for more funding, if they can show that we are exploring all possible avenues (especially if it involves industry) to get extra development effort. Obviously you can take part in GSoC projects for completely non-Grid things (and some people may already do this).
The agenda is here:
https://indico.cern.ch/event/876083/
Stewart (who has mentored GSoC students in the past) has agreed to give a short introduction just describing what it is like and what you can expect from the process if you want to become a mentor. I have created google doc, where people can post ideas:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1P-eoL-PwDD1mXdUsxj5TMy9WF9fF6in0PQWH_RvMVaQ/edit?usp=sharing
Its pretty blank at the moment, feel free to brainstorm any ideas there which we could discuss at the meeting. Even if it is something as basic as: “It would be really useful if service X had this feature”. On its own that’s not really a project but if there are other similar needs it might lead to something. It is just a starting point for a discussion in the meeting.
3) We should definitely have a Rucio meeting soon. There are some actions from the IRIS F2F meeting at the end of last year that should be discussed. Does anyone have any preferences between 24th, 31st January or 7th February?
4) HTCondor CE would be another sensible topic. The Tier-1 have got a machine working for ATLAS jobs, so we have something to say at least? I don’t know if anyone else has made much progress?
5) Any other topics, people want discussing?
Alastair
