UK SOCIAL POLICY ASSOCIATION ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2020
2nd Call for Papers
15-17 July, University of York, England
Conference Theme: ‘Beyond the echo-chamber: a vision for social policy’.
We are delighted to be hosting the 2020 Social Policy Association Annual Conference at the University of York. This year’s theme is ‘Beyond the echo-chamber: a vision for social policy’. The conference aims to invite participants to reflect on the future of the discipline within an increasingly polarised world by revisiting existing synergies highlighting the value of policy and practice, of integrating social policy domains both nationally and internationally, of reflecting on the interdependent nature of human existence and the importance of interdisciplinarity. We invite people to think about the contribution of Social Policy to policy making and remaining open and reflective to political perspectives that might challenge predominant views of social policy.
To reach beyond the echo chamber we aspire to introduce a number of key initiatives that aim to open the conference to speakers and delegates from diverse backgrounds and also support the connection of Social Policy to a wider audience. The conference will take advantage of the rich social investigative heritage that the city of York offers and also engage with local community groups.
The City and the University of York offer a supportive environment for researchers, academics, practitioners and activists to challenge predominant views and influence the shape of Social Policy in the UK and beyond. We hope that this year’s conference will continue to provide inspiration for analysis, synergies and debate.
The city of York benefits from good transport links from all major UK cities as well as regional airports (Manchester and Leeds-Bradford).
Call for Papers:
The overall theme of the conference will be ‘Beyond the echo-chamber: a vision for social policy’. We are particularly interested in (but not limited to) papers that aim to tackle the gap between policy and practice, integrate social policy domains and effectively push social policy analysis and research out of its comfort zone. Papers could be both historical and forward-looking, and consider issues and challenges for social policy within an increasingly polarised world.
We expect to organise a number of specific streams for presentations, including ‘race’ and social policy, social activism, care and policy, and innovative ideas for future policy making.
Other streams will be determined according to the submissions we receive, but are likely to include poverty and social protection, inequality and opportunity, housing policy, Brexit and social policy, attitudes to welfare, ageing and care, health and social care funding, social development and social policy, migration and social rights, pensions and financial literacy, youth transitions, work and unemployment. This is not an exclusive list, however, and submissions on any aspect of national or international social policy are welcome, and papers from outside the conference theme will be accommodated, as is the usual practice for the SPA annual conferences.
In addition to single papers, we would especially welcome proposals for symposia, whereby three or more papers linked to a particular theme are submitted together for consideration. Symposia will allow participants to engage more deeply with their special interests and create a space for focused debate on a specific theme. Ideas for symposia will need to be submitted by the panel organiser in the first instance, including abstracts and details of all contributions.
For papers, abstracts should be 200-400 words. Proposals for symposia should consist of a title and 200 word outline of the aims of the symposium as well as details of the organiser, contributors, (including email addresses) and abstracts. All abstracts and symposium proposals will be reviewed by reviewers from our Programme Committee prior to acceptance.
