The January 2020 issue of Learned Publishing is now online
The first 2020 issue of Learned Publishing is dedicated to examining the current state of society publishing, which is facing change on every front - global funding and policy transformations, an evolving membership, as well as new fields of study, new research practices and new modes of scholarly communication
We feature leading experts who offer original research and analysis into the shifting landscape of society publishing. Alicia Wise and Lorraine Estelle report from the SPA-OPS project on the myriad ways in which society publishers are transitioning to open access business models. Authors share their first-hand experience with innovative approaches to license agreements, such as Malavika Legge at Portland Press
Jonathan Roscoe reflects on results of the 5th annual Wiley survey of society publishers and forecasts the trends ahead in the new year. Michael Clarke of Clarke & Esposito offers a guide for those society publishers looking to strike publishing agreements with external partners. And Phill Jones documents the highlights of a 2019 SSP webinar on the future of independent and scholarly publishing.
A series of case studies demonstrate the diverse approaches society publishers are tackling economic challenges - from the fully independent Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy, to GeoScienceWorld's non-profit collaborative model. The British Ecological Society and the British Institute of Radiology have found success outsourcing some or all of their publishing administration to commercial partners, although there are notable differences in their priorities and strategic models.
Contributors in this issue debate the "existential threats" facing society publishers and reflect on the value of independent, scholar-led journal publishing. Dana Compton and Angela Cochran share lessons and benefits gained from the books program at the American Society for Civil Engineers. These and many more thematic articles in the January issue are now online and available to all SSP and ALPSP members - kick off the new year with this exciting new issue!
And lots more...
