Dear all,
BBC Radio 4 have devoted a great deal of attention to Vasily Grossman recently. Their 8-hour dramatization of LIFE AND FATE, their 4-hour dramatization of STALINGRAD and their 5 short programmes about the genesis of STALINGRAD are now all available on their website. Their LIFE AND FATE is made up of eight short, self-contained plays; the highlight is “Anna’s Letter” - Janet Suzman’s reading of the last letter written by Viktor Shtrum’s mother before she is executed by the Nazis. The dramatization of STALINGRAD is powerful - especially the second half, about the battle itself. The five programmes about how Grossman came to write the novel are clearly presented by Catherine Merridale; the other main speaker is Grossman’s most recent biographer, Alexandra Popoff.

I’m grateful to the BBC. It is not often that a twentieth-century Russian writer gets such thoughtful coverage.
All the best, Robert
