Stream alterations
Please note that there have been alterations to the conference streams. We hope these changes will better stimulate discussion between conference attendees, as well as facilitate a more even representation of attendees across conference streams.
Pharmaceuticals, Screening and diagnosis, and Alternative/complementary medicines have been absorbed into a new stream: Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment, covering all aspects of diagnostic and treatment pathways. The Politics and Ethics of Health is a broadened stream seeking submission on the political economy of health through to localised ethical and risk related issues in medicine. We have combined 'teaching medical sociology' and 'methods' into 'Pedagogy and Methods', to house all submissions relating to the generation of medical sociology data and research led teaching within medical sociology. Lastly, we have combined inequalities with our gender and race streams to better create a space for colleagues exploring intersectional inequalities, including the experiences of disabled people and the LGBTQ community for example; 'Inequalities and intersectionality'.
Volunteering
Over the last couple of years we have noticed a decline in the number of conference attendees volunteering to chair sessions and get involved in conference-based mentoring. While we fully understand that this is likely to be related to workplace workload pressures, we cannot run a successful conference without your support - the Medical Sociological community is what we all make it! Mentoring is a really important, valued and rewarding experience for all of those who take part. Over the next year as a committee we are hoping to broaden how we support mentoring to enable more of the community to get involved, for example, by including peer to peer support as well as seeking to better utilise our regional and special interest groups outside of the annual conference.
The abstract submission deadline is Tuesday 28 April 2020, abstracts received after this date will not be considered.
To submit please go to https://www.britsoc.co.uk/events/key-bsa-events-lister/
