Dear colleagues,
Registrations for the 2019 ECOOM-VUB colloquium 'Investigating the societal impact of research: Past achievements and future developments' (Brussels, November 28 & 29) are coming in steadily, but there are still few vacant spots for interested participants. To offer everyone the opportunity to attend, the deadline to register has been extended to November 25th (17h00), and is possible via the event website<https://www.vub.be/events/2019/brussels-colloquium-on-societal-impact-by-ecoom-vub>.
With its 2019 colloquium, ECOOM-VUB approaches the societal impact (SI) of research - an increasingly important topic both on the global research agenda and in university governance - in two distinct ways.
* The first day (Thursday November 28th, VUB Campus<[log in to unmask],4.3926973,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x47c3c4c8e0471a2b:0x34a700e47f2f7fc5!8m2!3d50.821658!4d4.394886" target="_blank">https:[log in to unmask],4.3926973,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x47c3c4c8e0471a2b:0x34a700e47f2f7fc5!8m2!3d50.821658!4d4.394886>) is devoted to the study of the societal impact of research. After a keynote speech by Prof. Dr. Paul Benneworth (Western Norway University of Applied Sciences), the colloquium features four panels wherein researchers address the nature of SI, explore its methods of assessment and outline various strategies to generate SI in the context of university research.
* The second day (Friday November 29th, European Committee of the Regions<[log in to unmask],4.3751273,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x47c3c4996a6107bb:0x455e1ae06e65c958!8m2!3d50.840462!4d4.377316" target="_blank">https:[log in to unmask],4.3751273,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x47c3c4996a6107bb:0x455e1ae06e65c958!8m2!3d50.840462!4d4.377316>) centers on the role and use of societal impact in the context of national and supranational research policy. The keynote speech by Prof. Dr. Luc Soete (University of Maastricht) is first followed by a select number of case studies into existing examples of SI assessment and promotion. Hereafter, Prof. Dr. Massimo Florio (University of Milan) and Frank Zwetsloot (Science Works) offer their expert perspectives on SI evaluation at the university. A roundtable discussion with policy makers from various levels of university governance closes the colloquium, mapping how SI features in the heterogenous landscape of research policy.
Both the full program and practical information are accessible at the event website<https://www.vub.be/events/2019/brussels-colloquium-on-societal-impact-by-ecoom-vub> or https://www.vub.be/events/2019/brussels-colloquium-on-societal-impact-by-ecoom-vub
Please be advised that the venue at the European Committee of the Regions has a limited capacity, and attendance of the colloquium is limited. We therefore recommend registering quickly to ensure your participation in the 2019 ECOOM-VUB colloquium.
We look forward to welcoming you at the event!
