*Trail of Tears*
By Patrick Blessinger
As the harsh winds of change blew west,
thousands of Native Americans were driven
along with it from Georgia to Oklahoma.
The unforgiving trail was long and desperate;
it was a trail of exile, a trail of extreme hardship,
and a trail endured by courageous people.
And as the dust filled the air, it covered their
faces and battered their eyes and mingled
with their tears from the awful, cruel march.
The brave animals that accompanied them
licked the tear drenched dust from their cheeks
and comforted them with sad and knowing eyes.
