*Lady Liberty*
To Ramonita Velazquez
By Patrick Blessinger
Emerging like a lighthouse from the hazy,
early morning mist of the New York Harbor,
the dignified Lady Liberty raises her torch
and shines her beacon of hope to enlighten
the world with peace and tolerance. She stands
resolute against the forces of tyranny and
provides safe harbor for liberty and justice.
And as the fog lifts, the mist glistens like
tears on her peaceful face in remembrance
of those who bravely gave their lives to secure
freedom. Her divine crown of seven spikes
points towards the seven seas and continents
to send the message to all that the blessings
of self-determination are a right to all people.
And in the twilight, as the sun slowly dips
out of view in the west, the divine Libertas
steadfastly faces east as she faithfully waits
for the sun to rise again. With her regal crown
of liberty, she holds on devoutly to the tablet
that embodies the humane rule of law for she
never grows weary in her guard of liberty.
