in bubs
waiting for my turn
the teacher had set up spelling circles
when she pointed at a chalked word
she called a student by name
to spell out the word in letters
then pronounce it to the class
the words are easy
3 or 4 letters
even as a 6 year old I’m bored
impatient for my turn
and then
I’m on -
s.a.y.s. I say
then go to pronounce
and hesitate -
worlds fall
s - saze I mutter
knowing it should be sez
but after hearing days as daze
my spoken mojo
has evaporated
fine she says
and moves on
half of me glad
not to have been corrected
in front of all
half appalled
that rigour had
so easily slid
