Dear Colleagues:

The School of Literature, Media, and Communication (LMC) at the Georgia Institute of Technology invites applicants to fill a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Digital Media with an emphasis on design and social justice, effective August 2020.

We seek a multidisciplinary practitioner and theorist who is pursuing research on digital technologies as they intersect with issues of equity and inclusion. The school’s commitment to social justice in research, education and community engagement is exemplified in existing areas of focus such as civic media; black media studies; and cultural studies of science, race, and gender. Collaboration is encouraged with faculty and students working in these and other related fields.

The teaching load is two courses per semester (one undergraduate and one graduate), with specific teaching areas in interaction design, information design, experimental media, or introduction to computational media. The ideal candidate will teach in our undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Computational Media (BSCM) and Digital Media (DM), including cross-listed courses with Human-Computer Interaction (MSHCI), and relevant design and social justice courses in Literature, Media, and Communication (BSLMC). Ph.D. or terminal degree in an appropriate discipline required.

The BSCM degree provides students with a grasp of the computer as a medium, with expressive, technical, and historical/critical dimensions. The DM degrees offer graduate education focused on digital media design and criticism. With a shared emphasis on “making with meaning,” students and faculty work together to investigate and develop media technologies—for social empowerment, activism, learning, and play—through approaches that transcend conventional disciplinary divides. Building on the insights of media studies, human-computer Interaction, science and technology studies, and design, we are committed to pioneering new forms of humanistic scholarship and to transforming the tools of both creative expression and civic life to illuminate the social and cultural opportunities, as well as the unintended consequences, of nascent technologies.

The School of LMC’s location at a public technological university in Atlanta makes it an important international center for innovation at the intersection of the arts, media, and technology. As a multidisciplinary unit within the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts, The School of LMC also includes the Institute's Communication Center and the Writing and Communication Program that encompasses the Brittain Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, providing discipline-specific courses for campus-wide audiences.

LMC believes diversity is foundational to creating the most intellectually vibrant and successful academic communities. Therefore, we seek candidates whose demonstrated commitment to diversity and excellence in teaching, research, professional activities, and community service will make them vital contributors to our shared programmatic vision. We are especially interested in applicants who will work effectively with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds, including: racial and ethnic minorities, women, individuals who identify with LGBTQ+ communities, individuals with disabilities, individuals from lower income backgrounds, and/or first-generation college graduates. Applicants should state in their cover letter how their teaching, research, service, and/or life experiences prepare them to advance our school’s commitment to inclusion, equity, diversity, and justice. For more information, please visit our websites at lmc.gatech.edu<http://www.lmc.gatech.edu> and dm.lmc.gatech.edu<http://www.dm.lmc.gatech.edu>

Applicants should send a cover letter surveying the applicant’s expertise for the position, a curriculum vitae, research statement, and a list of three potential references in a single PDF to [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>

Review of applications will begin on December 3, 2019, and will continue until the position is filled. An earned doctorate is required by the start of the appointment, and a background check must be completed prior to employment.

Georgia Tech is a top-ranked public research university situated in the heart of Atlanta, a diverse and vibrant city with great economic and cultural strengths. The Institute is a member of the University System of Georgia, the Georgia Research Alliance, and the Association of American Universities. Georgia Tech prides itself on its technology resources, collaborations, high-quality student body, and its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Georgia Tech is an equal education/employment opportunity institution dedicated to building a diverse community. We strongly encourage applications from women, underrepresented minorities, individuals with disabilities, and veterans. Georgia Tech has policies to promote a healthy work-life balance and is aware that attracting faculty may require meeting the needs of two careers.
