*An opportunity to join a team examining variations in quality and safety in healthcare provision and developing indicators for use in the NHS and internationally*
The aim of the research is to identify and develop indicators of quality of delivery of healthcare using routinely collected administrative health data.
There is a great deal of scope for original research in this data-rich environment. You will focus on analyses of inpatient data and the development of useful outcome indicators using methods such as multi-level modelling and statistical process control charts. Examples of future work will include expanding prospective surveillance methods and further analysis of inequalities in health care. Duties and responsibilities
- To analyse health and other data
- To ensure the validity and reliability of analyses at all times
- To design study protocols To maintain accurate and complete records of all findings
- To present findings to colleagues
- To publish in high quality journals and to present data at national and international meetings, seminars and other presentations
- To provide advice to other staff and students
- To attend relevant workshops and conferences as necessary
- To develop contacts within the College and the wider community
- To promote the reputation of the Unit, the Department and the College
- To participate in Group/Unit research meetings and internal seminars
Patient and public engagement and involvement (PPIE)
- To work with the PPIE Manager to ensure that all projects are signed off by the Research User Group prior to their start
- Ensure diversity in lay partner involvement
- At the project level, ensure appropriate, effective and meaningful lay partner involvement in projects and throughout the research cycle
- Ensure assessment and documentation of PPIE impact on the project, and from the perspective of researchers and lay partners
Essential requirements
You should hold a PhD or equivalent in epidemiology, statistics, health sciences, data sciences, health services research or a related numerate subject. You should also have knowledge of clinical analytics, patient safety and the NHS.

The post is full-time, fixed term until 31 July 2022.
The research team are based at premises near Blackfriars station, London. The unit was pivotal in triggering the investigation into emergency care at Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust.
The team is led by Dr Paul Aylin, a Professor in Epidemiology and Public Health. The post is funded through a research grant by Dr Foster, a company specialising in the production of reports on health service performance.
