An Introduction to Multivariate Data Analysis (one-day course) organised by the Liverpool Multivariate Modelling Group
Time: Friday 13th December 2019, 10:00 to 16:30
Venue: The University of Liverpool (Harold Cohen Library)
Course Fee: £90
Course overview
In this course we will explore several techniques for the analysis of multivariate data and how they can be applied to address research questions such as:
• Are there a small number of underlying factors explaining the variables in a dataset?
• Is there a natural clustering in the dataset?
• Can we classify individuals into groups based on their characteristics?
• Can we predict that a person will develop a particular condition/disease by looking at a range of variables?
This course will be run by the Liverpool Multivariate Modelling Group at the University of Liverpool. The course will cover sessions on Principal Component Analysis, Cluster Analysis and Discriminant Function Analysis by Professor Marta García-Fiñana, Dr Chris Cheyne and Dr David Hughes. It will also include demonstrations on how to apply these techniques using R software and how to interpret the results.
Who should attend? Is it right for me?
This course is aimed at researchers (PhDs, RAs, staff from academia and industry) who work in the biomedical field. It is suitable for people with experience in the analysis of data but not necessarily multivariate data.
What will delegates learn?
By the end of this course delegates will:
• Have an appreciation of the complexities of multivariate data
• Learn the principles behind a range of methods of multivariate data analysis
• Know how to carry out these procedures using R.
What does the course cover?
• Principal Component Analysis
• Cluster Analysis
• Discriminant Function Analysis
• Demonstration of how these techniques can be applied using the free statistical software R
