The Departments of Medical Statistics and Infectious Disease Epidemiology wish to appoint a statistician to work on a programme of statistical work linked to randomized controlled trials in India and Africa.
The work in the Department of Medical Statistics (60%) will involve acting as the trial statistician for a cluster randomized controlled trial assessing the impact and cost-effectiveness of i) a package of maternity and newborn care and health promotion and ii) after school support to primary school age children in villages in Madhya Pradesh, India. The trial uses a design in which rural villages are randomized to receive one or other of these interventions. This research builds on previous trials conducted in Telangana, India (http://journals.plos.org/plosmedicine/article?id=10.1371/journal.pmed.1002324 and http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0065775)
The trial is funded by a charity, Effective Intervention. The role will entail close collaboration with the implementing partners of the two interventions, members of the research trial teams in India and at Effective Intervention, and colleagues at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
40% of the role will involve collaboration with Dr John Bradley and colleagues in the Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology. A component of the work will be on malaria control. This will include a cluster randomised trial of the drug ivermectin to reduce the prevalence of malaria infection in Guinea Bissau and a study of insecticide-treated netting to reduce the entry of mosquitoes into houses in Tanzania.
The successful candidate will have a postgraduate qualification in statistics. There will be opportunities for methodological research related to both these roles. The post also includes teaching of postgraduate students at LSHTM. A demonstrated aptitude for applied research in medical statistics is essential, along with knowledge, and experience of use of, statistical packages such as Stata and R. Further particulars are included in the job description.
The post is funded for one year in the first instance and is available immediately. The salary will be on the School's Research Fellow scale, £40,011 - £45,437 per annum inclusive of London Weighting. The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary "Director's Days". Membership of the Pension Scheme is available. The post will be based in London.
Applications should be made on-line via our website at http://jobs.lshtm.ac.uk<http://jobs.lshtm.ac.uk/>. Applications should also include the names and email contacts of two referees who can be contacted immediately if shortlisted. Online applications will be accepted by the automated system until 10pm of the closing date. Any queries regarding the application process may be addressed to [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>.
The supporting statement section should set out how your qualifications, experience and training meet each of the selection criteria. Please provide one or more paragraphs addressing each criterion. The supporting statement is an essential part of the selection process and thus a failure to provide this information will mean that the application will not be considered. An answer to any of the criteria such as "Please see attached CV" will not be considered acceptable.
