The full story seems to be this one at the link below. What i heard on the 7am ABC radio news appears as though it might have been an 'abridged' version - with the addition of the AMA comment (which doesn't exactly appear in the print version).
It seems as though Hannah Dahlen is on to it (and cited in this one). Apparently we do have good Australian data. Will be interested to see what is next.

Part of the problem is that costs saved may well come from a different budget to costs incurred, but this is common across all healthcare. Another issue is that studies in one health system are difficult to translate to another, but there are Australian trials in the review.
