Hi Nik,
I agree FSM is a good place to start, but it will only ever give you a
measure of economic deprivation. You can often get a good idea about an
area by looking at the most granular IMD data, lower-layer super output
areas (LSOAs), which will give you a good idea of the nature of an area
if you look at the individual parameters of deprivation that go to make
up the IMD, all of which must play a part in science capital. Each LSOA
is designed to be around 1500 properties.
Another thing to look for would be direction of change / volatility in
IMD or FSM data or (at school level) SATS / attainment data and Ofsted
reports, which sometimes contain little nuggets about the school, though
rarely any data.
