Stratifiedreproduction, targeted contraceptive counsellingand conditionality: exploring practices aroundLong Acting Reversible Contraception in Britain
Dr Rachael Eastham
Division of HealthResearch, Lancaster University
Date: 20thNovember 2019
Room: County MainSR 4
Time: 4-5:30pm
The concept of stratified reproduction (Colen 1995) will beused as a lens to consider some of the current practices and programmes in theprovision of Long Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC) in Britain. Thispresentation will illuminate the ways in which infringements of women’sreproductive rights are not ‘other’ -in time or place- but are widespread incontemporary Britain, legitimated through imperatives to decrease publicspending alongside wider discourses about overpopulation. The role of LARC inthis picture will be explored with specific focus on LARC programmes thattarget certain groups of contraception users (e.g. women who have had childrenremoved from their care). The presentation will conclude with an overview ofsome of the current work being undertaken by academics, practitioners and activiststo ensure LARC delivery is rights-based and that we remain alive to the eugenicconsequences, however indirect, of targeting certain women with LARC andprivileging the contraceptive preferences of the State over that of thecontraception user.
CHIR seminarseries are funded by the Division of Health Research
