Essential Skills Week
We are pleased to announce an extended range of Essential Skills short courses for 2019-20.
These half-day courses are £60 to attend, offering a beginners' introduction to a range of key programming languages and software. There are four courses, which can be taken separately or combined into a more comprehensive introduction to data analysis.
R Essential Skills (19 November<https://www.cmi.manchester.ac.uk/study/short/introductory/r-essentials-skills/#d.en.713113>)
This 'Essential Skills in R' workshop is for any researcher who has data they want to analyse using the R programming language. No prior computational experience is required. This hands-on workshop provides an introduction to the R programming environment and demonstrates the use of the R language for performing basic data analysis.
Python Essential Skills (20 November<https://www.cmi.manchester.ac.uk/study/short/introductory/python-essentials-skills/#d.en.713112>)
This workshop is for any researcher who has data they want to analyse using the Python programming language. No prior computational experience is required. This hands-on workshop provides an introduction to the Jupyter Python programming environment and demonstrates the use of the Python language for performing basic data analysis.
SQL Essential Skills (21 November<https://www.cmi.manchester.ac.uk/study/short/introductory/sql-essentials/#d.en.739636>)
Brand new for 2019-20! This SQL Essential Skills workshop is for any researcher who has a larger amount of data they want to pre-process (clean, reduce, summarise), before further analysis. No prior computational experience is required. This hands-on workshop provides an introduction to SQL using the DB Browser for SQL environment as well as illustrating how SQL and Relational databases can be used directly from a programming environment such as Python or R.
Excel Essential Skills (22 November<https://www.cmi.manchester.ac.uk/study/short/introductory/intro-to-data-analysis-using-excel/>)
This introductory course explores the data analysis functionality of Microsoft Excel 2010. Examples are worked through to demonstrate what Excel can be used for and how to make the most of some of the data analysis functions, including:
* built-in statistic functions;
* organising data using filters;
* pivot tables;
* charts.
The course is exercise-based and participants are encouraged to practice all the techniques as they are taught.

Bursaries are not guaranteed, and applications are considered on a case-by-case basis. Applicants will be required to provide a supporting statement from their supervisor.
