ESRC White Rose DTP Studentship 2020
The University of Leeds is part of the ESRC White Rose Doctoral Training Partnership (WRDTP), forming a collaboration between the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield, York, Bradford, Sheffield Hallam, Hull and Manchester Metropolitan. Through the partnership, the University is able to offer a range of ESRC Postgraduate Studentships to UK/EU applicants. The studentships are available in named Thematic Interdisciplinary Training Pathways on either a 1+3 (1 year of MA study followed by 3 years of a PhD) or a +3 basis (3 year PhD), depending on the level of training already achieved.
The 1+3 Studentships provide an integrated Research Training Masters (an MA Social Research - Interdisciplinary) - followed by a 3-year PhD programme. The course is 4 years for full time study and 7 years for part time study.
The +3 Studentships provide a 3 year PhD with the assumption that the applicant will have already met the majority of the core training requirements, usually through the attainment of a suitable Masters qualification, or that the PhD focus is largely on more advanced training. The course is 3 years for full time study and 5 years part time study.
The Thematic Interdisciplinary Training Pathways are as follows. Each link will direct you to further information about the Pathway:
Cities, Environment, and Liveability (CEL)
Security, Conflict, and Justice (SCJ)
Education, Childhood, and Youth (ECY)
Data, Communication, and New Technologies (DCT)
Wellbeing, Health, and Communities (WHC)
Sustainable Growth, Management, and Economic Productivity (SMP)
Civil Society, Development, and Democracy (CDD)
The award will cover fees at standard Research Council rates and provides a maintenance grant at a rate of £15,009 in Session 2020/21 for full-time study (part-time will be pro-rata at 60%). UK applicants will be eligible for a full award (fees and maintenance at standard Research Council rates) if they meet the residency criteria. EU applicants are normally eligible for a fees-only award, unless they have been resident in the UK for a full 3 years immediately preceding the start date of the award.
Applicants for either the 1+3 or the +3 MUST in the first instance apply for a place on a research postgraduate programme and be in receipt of a Student ID Number to be eligible. Applications without a valid ID Number will be rejected.
Applicants applying for a 1+3 award must hold a First Degree at undergraduate level equivalent to at least a UK Upper Second Class Honours Degree or equivalent (a less than sufficient undergraduate degree may be enhanced, for example, by a Masters degree). Applicants should either have graduated with the appropriate First Degree or be in their final year of study.
Applicants applying for a +3 award must demonstrate that they have achieved a level of research training to allow them to proceed directly to PhD (usually through the attainment of a previous Masters qualification in the social sciences).
An English language qualification equivalent to at least an IELTS overall band score of 6.5 and no less than 6.0 in any component is required. The test must be dated within two years of the start date of the course in order to be valid.
