Job title: Project Archivist: Plant Collector Archive
Application closing date: Sunday 17 November 2019
Location: Royal Horticultural Society Lindley Library, 80 Vincent Square, London SW1P 2PE
Salary: £28,000 per annum
Contract: Fixed term contract, 6 months, full time
Job category/type: Libraries and collections
We are seeking a Project Archivist to support RHS Libraries to complete an ambitious project to catalogue and make available online our unique Plant Collector Archive. This project is funded with generous support from the Foyle Foundation. The collection is a fascinating record of plant collecting activity around the globe and will be of enormous value to a wide range of researchers once catalogued. The first phase of the project, to catalogue the 19th-century plant collector papers, comprising manuscripts, journals and correspondence from plant collectors commissioned by the Society between the 1820s and 1860s, is nearing completion. The second phase, to catalogue the later papers relating to 20th-century collectors whose expeditions were co-sponsored by the RHS in return for plants, seeds and herbarium specimens, has just started.
We are looking for a qualified archivist with a good knowledge of archive cataloguing standards, a sound grasp of English grammar and punctuation, a keen eye for detail, and ideally an interest in the subject areas of botany or horticulture.
For more than 210 years the Royal Horticultural Society has been the force behind the nation's gardening. Our charitable purpose is to inspire passion and excellence in the science, art and practice of horticulture. Our vision is to enrich everyone's life through plants, and make the UK a greener and more beautiful place. As a charity, the RHS aims to inspire a wide range of audiences by demonstrating the wonders of gardening through all that we do including gardens and shows, in our publications and online, and through our work in the community.
