In that sense, if there's a (small) set of key environment variables, I guess it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibilities to ask to have them added to the Ops portal information? Or might be worth bearing in mind, anyway.

Yes. In an ideal world, the EGI Operations Portal would be the canonical
source of all experiment requirements relating to the operating
environment. But (as is much discussed) the Grid is an experiment
itself, constantly evolving. And hence it is not subject to the usual
standards of stability that we would apply to a vital service.
And so the standards for these variables are sketchy, for the time being
at least.
