Thanks Lesley.
An interesting article. In the UK, GDPR and UK DPA18 has been key to many improvements within schools around privacy and data protection, but many are still lagging behind. You have some firms selling cybersecurity guidance to schools as the solution, and others selling policies ... but many local authorities and schools-focussed DPO providers are trying to make sure that the whole picture is covered.
The supported by a group of volunteers, the Department of Education's Data Protection Working Group have previously issued a toolkit to support schools (some felt it was too little, some too much and others that the focus was not in the right place) and it has been a big step for many schools. Especially when you think that the last significant advice to English schools was Becta's guidance, released between 2008 and 2010. The DP working group has been back at it again and has put out more supporting resources for schools which are now available at https://www.educationdatamatters.org.uk. It is run by the group, not the DfE but has been part of DfE's work over the summer to get more advice, guidance and resources prepared. It is only a starting point as far more work needs to be done to support schools.
The group is looking for feedback (constructive please) so all comments appreciated.
