Hi Nicole:

That's an excellent and important question, as saturation is one of the most frequently misunderstood concepts in qualitative research. From my perspective, there are no 'cut and dried' answers to your question, and knowing when saturation occurs is, at least in part, an art.

I'm not a realist specialist, so I can't tell you if the concept of saturation is different in a realist synthesis than it is in other qualitative work, though I would venture to say it isn't? (realist specialists please do let me know if it is!)

I find this editorial by Jan Morse really helpful whenever I'm confused about saturation. It's not specific to realist synthesis, but does provide a good overview of the concept (from a qualitative research perspective): https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/1049732315576699

I hope it helps, and best of luck with your work.

Dear Realist review community!

I am doing a Realist review on naloxone based interventions to prevent opioid overdose. I am wondering if anyone has any tools or insights based on their work in identifying when saturation occurs? I understand the premise of stopping the review when no new literature contributes to the program theory, but how is that notated?

Thanks for your help!

Best wishes

Nicole
