Research Assistant (six months fixed-term – potentially extend. Flexible hours)
Ethnicity and Mental Health Project – SWLSTG and Wandsworth Community Empowerment Network.
We are seeking to recruit a Qualitative Researcher on a 6-month fixed-term contract (with possibility of extension) as part of the Ethnicity and Mental Health Project of South West London and St George’s (SWLSTG) Mental Health Trust, London, in collaboration with Wandsworth Community Empowerment Network (WCEN).
This is a service improvement project with the aim of reducing ethnic inequalities in mental health care. Funding has been agreed for a period of six months for project initiation and readiness prior to the start of a pilot project.
This phase of the project will accomplish the following: (i) finalise data points, both within the mental health service and relating to outside agencies, for ongoing audit of service access, experience and outcomes (ii) undertake evidence synthesis based on what is already known in this area (iii) derive a set of Quality Improvement (QI) indicators and (iv) develop a QI programme for service change with a specific focus on people from Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds.
This process will include (i) stakeholder events, focus groups and individual interviews using a qualitative approach in relation to data capture and analysis (ii) related data analysis and reporting and (iii) evidence synthesis of current knowledge on “what good looks like” in improving mental health service access, experience and outcomes for BAME communities.
Requirements
• You will have a flexible approach, with the ability to work with a range of stakeholders including community organisations, general public, NHS Trusts, other researchers and clinicians and people with lived experience and families.
• Good grasp of qualitative research methods, ideally including qualitative data synthesis and analysis.
• Experience of involvement in qualitative research.
• A detailed understanding of how mental health services are organised in the UK and good practices in mental health.
• Understanding of the key issues in relation to ethnicity and mental health in the UK.
• Prepared to work as a member of a small team.
• Ability to plan, prioritise and deliver tasks within agreed time scale.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Excellent writing ability.
What you will do
• Be a member of the Project Team.
• Work under the supervision of the Project Lead.
• Work closely with cross-functional partners, local community agencies, general public and service users and carers / family.
• Set up and conduct a range of stakeholder events including focus groups and other participatory events.
• Ensure qualitative data in relation to these and carry out relevant analysis.
• Contribute to the process of data synthesis and development of a service improvement QI programme and adapting this to local circumstances.
Salary :£29,056 – £36,134 - 3 days a week pro-rota.
