Your question is unclear.
The reading is more involving process than the writing. If you are after global particle index then that is kept in ltg, the global particle type is in ltype - both take a local/domain index.
If however, you are asking about the particle name/label then atmnam contains this as a string.

I wanted to change one of the codes of the dlpoly (external field). I wanted to know that how does the code read (or write) the atomic number of the elements? By what name? I guess that it should be "ltype" or "lsite". Is it right?
