Dear Colleagues,
The Anthropology and Geography: Dialogues Past, Present and Future conference will be held 4 to 7 June 2020 at the British Museum, Clore Centre, SOAS, Senate House and Royal Geographical Society. The Call closes on 8 January 2020.
We invite you to submit papers and visual or aural anthropologies to our Panel MV10:
Panel Session: Nomadic geographies: territories as spatial imaginaries moving with people and things
Conveners: Michele Feder-Nadoff, independent anthropologist-artist; Claudia Rocha Valverde (El Colegio de San Luis); Lorena Ojeda Davila (Universidad Michoacana/University of New Mexico)

Short abstract:
This panel maps nomadic geographies and territories to re-interpret the meaning of place and home. Papers present ethnographies analyzing how material and immaterial creative practices stitch together distances, mend spatial ruptures and route new spatial-affective-haptic-sensorial correspondences.
Long abstract:
We are interested in ethnographies mapping nomadic human geographies and creative performative agency. Narratives are welcomed sharing stories and analysis of forced or chosen displacement and dispersement. Suggested themes might include:
How are practices intrinsic to one place maintained through alteration in another?
How do sensorial and performative practices, such as, craft or creative and/or religious rituals reconfigure human geographies?
And, how do people (re)configure cultural ecologically-based practices within drastically altered ecological landscapes?
How can sacred spaces or pilgrimage paths be sustained within changing political and biological geographies?
How might we then approach an anthropology of home?
This panel calls for papers or visual or aural anthropologies of places, as photo essays, videos or soundscapes.
MAPPING NOMADIC GEOGRAPHIES LAB:
The panel sessions will culminate in an OPEN-LAB inviting participants to map nomadic geographies. Mappings will trace histories, moving borders, routes and journeys of peoples, places and things with threads, ink and collage into a collective tapestry redefining territories and space.
Proposals should consist of a paper title, a (very) short abstract of <300 characters and an abstract of 250 words. On submission the proposal, the proposing author (but not any co-authors listed) will receive automated email confirming receipt. If you do not receive this email, please first check the login environment (click login on the left) to see if your proposal is there. If it is, it simply means confirmation got spammed or lost; and if it is not, it means you need re-submit, as process went wrong somewhere. A paper can only be submitted once and only one paper can be submitted per person.
Contact us for any questions or to discuss ideas.
Best wishes,
Michele
