Primary Research Group Inc. has published the Survey of Academic Library Leadership: Level of Support for Bibliometrics/Altmetrics, ISBN 978-157440-598-9
The report looks at the extent of support from library management for initiatives and a library role in encouraging, instructing and servicing users of bibliometrics/altmetrics on campus. The report helps its readers to answer questions such as: what are library management plans to develop bibliometrics/altmetrics capabilities over the next few years? What have they been doing over the past few years? How satisfied is library management with the library’s efforts in this area? How strong is demand for bibliometrics/altmetrics services from library patrons? How much has the library been spending in this area in terms of staff time and financial resources? How much does it plan to spend in the near future? How large are library staffs devoted to bibliometrics/altmetrics?
Data and commentary in the study is derived from a survey of 73 academic library directors, deans, university librarians and other high level library officials.
Just a few of the 40-page report’s main findings are that:
Doctoral level universities serious lag research 1 and research 2 level universities in their level of support for bibliometrics/altmetrics
Public universities in the sample had a mean staff of 1.63 FTE positions devoted largely to bibliometrics/altmetrics.
Support for increased spending on bibliometrics/altmetrics tended to be higher among older than younger library administrators.
