We are preparing a session proposal for the 6th International Convention on Food and Drink Studies of the IEHCA – European Institute for the history and Culture of Food (4-5 June 2020 – University of Tours, France). Please find below the abstract of our proposal on “Food and migration: state of the art and contemporary issues”. We invite you to express your interest in participating in this panel. The modality of submission is indicated below in this email.

“Food and migration: state of the art and contemporary issues”

The link between food and migration constitutes nowadays an integral field of research in the domain of food studies, as many researchers and projects focus on food issues emerging as a result of the displacement of individuals and groups. Derives from this a rich array of ethnographic examples, methodological approaches, and conceptual frameworks that reflect the extent of this field and the importance of its contribution to food studies. More specifically, analysing these issues means to apprehend the ways in which individuals (adults and children) give shape to their memory (at different scales: personal, family, institutional, regional, national, transnational, among others) through practices and eating habits that are resituated, transmitted and negotiated in a migratory context. It also involves exploring both the ways in which individuals and groups embody the identities to which they refer or are associated in their daily lives, and the manifestations of these identities in the public space. It is thus a question of establishing a fruitful back-and-forth movement between representations and materiality / corporality, between private and public sphere, which makes it possible to provide an essential contribution to the study of the complexity of food.

This panel aims to be an opportunity to discuss current developments in the field of study that focuses on the link between food and migration, with the aim of comparing methodological approaches, of putting into perspective the analysed contexts, subjects and ethnographic objects, and of articulating the conceptual frameworks mobilized.




We invite researchers working in this field to submit their proposal to contribute to this exchange in the form of an abstract (in English or French) of 250 words maximum, accompanied by a short bio-bibliographic note, to be sent to the organizers of the session by the 25th of October:

Proposals will be pre-evaluated to compose a session, which will be the object of an application to the conference organizing committee. Participants will be informed of the outcome of the pre-selection.

 “Alimentation et migration : état des lieux et enjeux contemporains” 

Le lien entre alimentation et migration constitue désormais un champs d’étude à part entière dans le domaine des Food Studies, car de nombreux.se.s chercheur.e.s et projets portent leur attention sur les enjeux alimentaires émergeant à la suite du déplacement d’individus et de groupes. En dérive un riche éventail d’exemples ethnographiques, approches méthodologiques et cadres conceptuels qui témoignent de la vaste portée de ce champ et de l’importance de son apport aux études sur l’alimentation. Plus particulièrement, analyser ces enjeux signifie appréhender les manières dont les individus (adultes et enfants) donnent corps à leur mémoire (à différentes échelles : personnelle, familiale, institutionnelle, régionale, nationale, transnationale, entre autres) au travers de pratiques et habitudes alimentaires resituées, transmises et négociées en contexte migratoire. Cela engage également l’exploration à la fois des façons dont les individus et les groupes incarnent les identités auxquelles ils se réfèrent ou sont associés dans leur vécu quotidien, et des manifestations de ces identités dans l’espace public. Il est ainsi question d’établir un va-et-vient fructueux entre représentations et matérialité/corporalité, entre sphère privée et publique, qui permet de fournir une contribution essentielle à l’étude de la complexité du fait alimentaire. 

Ce panel se veut une occasion pour dialoguer autour des développements actuels du champs d’étude qui porte sur le lien entre alimentation et migration, avec le but de confronter les approches méthodologiques, mettre en perspective les contextes, sujets et objets ethnographiques analysés, et articuler les cadres conceptuels mobilisés. 




Nous invitons les chercheur.e.s travaillant dans ce domaine à soumettre leur proposition de contribution à cet échange sous forme d’un résumé de communication (en anglais ou en français) de 250 mots maximum, accompagné d’une courte note bio-bibliographique, à envoyer aux organisatrices de la session pour le 25 octobre au plus tard :
